Elaboration (vinification)
Viña Pomal Crianza is characterized by a traditional winemaking: after de-stemming and crushing, alcoholic fermentation takes place. The total maceration is two weeks, looking for a structure of soft, pleasant wines with great fruit intensity. Twelve months in American oak barrels (15% new) give us the complexity and maturity necessary to complete the expression of this wine.
Vineyard (viticulture)
The Viña Pomal estate covers 90 hectares of vineyards. These are located inside the municipality of Haro and less than 2 kilometres from the winery, in one of the town’s most beautiful enclaves, overlooking the Ebro River as it flows downstream through the shells de Haro pass.
Our estate encompasses different ecosystems with different soils and varying degrees of exposure to the sun, which calls for the careful selection of homogenous zones. The estate combines traditional Rioja practices with precision winegrowing techniques, implementing state of the art environmentally friendly winegrowing, always with a view to obtaining premium quality. In addition to the work on our estate's vineyards we also carefully select grapes from our Rioja Alta suppliers.
The 2014 vintage was marked by the weather during harvest. After a cold winter, bud break arrived earlier than usual due to high temperatures and low soil moisture levels in spring. After flowering, there was an excellent fruit set, although the lack of rain delayed veraison some what compared to previous years. Ripening was slow and somewhat irregular, so picking was delayed. Heavy rains during the first half of October made for hard work at the vineyards, forcing grapes election on a plot-by-plot basis. Fortunately, early leaf thinning proved crucial in ensuring clusters in good condition.
