Scala Dei is the oldest winery in the D.O.Q. Priorat It was established by the Carthusian monks in the year 1163 and, today, it retains the same spirit of handmade craftsmanship. Scala Dei wines capture the essence of the steep landscape, the intense climate and the old vines, the result is wines with an authentic expression of the terroir that form a prestigious portfolio. Scala Dei is the only Priorat winery that has a vineyard not only on the characteristic liquor floor of the D.O. but also in the highest areas of the Priorat at 800 m altitude with a differential soil (blackboards, clays and calcareous soils) where Grenache achieves its maximum expression in the world. It consists of 90 hectares of own vineyards distributed in 40 different locations and with an average age of 45 years. Scala Dei wines are designed in the vineyard and are made by hand throughout the year. The viticulture practices are different for each plot depending on the wine that you want to obtain from your grapes. Each vineyard will be destined to the type of wine that best suits its characteristics. All this implies that Scala Dei wines have very limited production, are incredibly powerful and enjoy a wide complexity of flavors that, in addition, provide a high aging capacity.
Scala Dei wines have been consolidated in the field of red wines, which has led to the specialized press and competitions in recent years granting them the best compliments and awards. Examples of these recognitions are Scala Dei St. Antoni
and Scala Dei Masdeu
wines, made with grapes from a single historical vineyard and both have recently been scored with 95 Parker points. Also highlight the single-varietal red Scala Dei Garnatxa
, the rosé Scala Dei Pla dels Àngels
or the white Scala Dei Massipa
